How to Fix Netgear Router Not Showing 5GHz WiFi Band?

Your Netgear router is supposed to broadcast two WiFi networks — one on 2.4GHz and one on 5GHz. But when you scan for WiFi on your phone or laptop, only the 2.4GHz network shows up and the 5GHz band is completely missing. This does not mean your router is broken. The 5GHz band is probably just disabled or hidden in the settings.

Check if Your Netgear Router Supports 5GHz

Not every Netgear router has dual-band support. Budget models and older routers may only broadcast on 2.4GHz. Check the model number on the sticker at the bottom of your router and look it up on the Netgear website. If the product page mentions Dual-Band or AC followed by a number like AC1200 or AC1750, your router supports 5GHz. If it only says N300 or N150, it is a single-band router and 5GHz is not available.

Enable the 5GHz Band in Router Settings

The 5GHz radio can be turned off in the router admin panel without affecting the 2.4GHz band. Log into your Netgear router by opening a browser and going to routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1. Enter your admin credentials. Go to Wireless Settings or Setup then Wireless Setup. You should see separate sections for 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Make sure the Enable Radio checkbox is checked for the 5GHz band. If it was unchecked, check it, give the 5GHz network a name and password, and click Apply.

Separate the WiFi Network Names

Many Netgear routers have a Smart Connect feature that combines both bands under one network name. Your phone connects to whichever band the router decides is best. The problem is that some devices get stuck on 2.4GHz and never switch to 5GHz. To fix this, go to Wireless Settings in the admin panel and turn off Smart Connect. Then set different names for each band like HomeWiFi for 2.4GHz and HomeWiFi-5G for 5GHz. This lets you manually choose which band to connect to.

Check if Your Device Supports 5GHz

Some older phones, laptops, and smart home devices only support 2.4GHz WiFi. If your phone cannot see the 5GHz network but your laptop can, the phone likely does not have a 5GHz WiFi adapter. Check your device specifications to confirm it supports 802.11ac or WiFi 5 or newer. Devices that only list 802.11n may or may not support 5GHz depending on the model.

Change the 5GHz WiFi Channel

In some countries certain 5GHz channels are restricted or require DFS radar detection which can cause the band to disappear temporarily. Log into the router admin panel, go to Wireless Settings for the 5GHz band, and change the channel from Auto to a lower channel like 36, 40, 44, or 48. These channels do not require DFS and are available in all regions. Click Apply and wait for the router to restart the wireless radio. The 5GHz network should appear within a minute.

Update the Router Firmware

Outdated firmware can have bugs that disable the 5GHz band or cause it to drop intermittently. Go to routerlogin.net, navigate to Advanced then Administration then Firmware Update, and click Check. If a new version is available, install it and let the router restart. Firmware updates often fix wireless stability issues and can restore a missing 5GHz band that disappeared after a previous buggy update.

Factory Reset as a Last Resort

If the 5GHz band still does not appear after trying everything above, a factory reset clears all settings and restores the router to its default configuration where both bands are enabled. Press and hold the Reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds. After the router restarts, log in with the default credentials from the sticker and set up both WiFi bands from scratch. The 5GHz network should appear immediately after the reset.

Netgear 5GHz WiFi Not Showing FAQ

Q.1 Is the 5GHz band faster than 2.4GHz on a Netgear router?

Ans. Yes, 5GHz provides significantly faster speeds than 2.4GHz. On a typical Netgear AC1750 router, the 5GHz band can deliver speeds up to 1300 Mbps while the 2.4GHz band tops out at 450 Mbps. However 5GHz has shorter range and does not penetrate walls as well as 2.4GHz. Use 5GHz for devices close to the router that need speed like streaming TVs and gaming consoles. Use 2.4GHz for devices that are far away or need to go through walls like smart home sensors and security cameras.

Q.2 Why does my 5GHz network keep disappearing and coming back on my Netgear router?

Ans. This usually happens when the router is set to a DFS channel on the 5GHz band. DFS channels require the router to scan for radar signals, and if it detects any interference it temporarily shuts down the 5GHz radio for up to 30 minutes. Change the 5GHz channel to a non-DFS channel like 36, 40, 44, or 48 in the router wireless settings. This stops the disappearing act completely.

Q.3 Can walls and distance affect whether I can see the 5GHz network?

Ans. Yes, the 5GHz signal has a shorter range than 2.4GHz and is more easily blocked by walls, floors, and large objects. If you are in a different room from the router, your device might not see the 5GHz network at all while the 2.4GHz network still shows up. Move closer to the router to confirm the 5GHz network exists. If you need 5GHz coverage in distant rooms, consider adding a Netgear WiFi extender or mesh satellite to extend the 5GHz signal.
